You Are More, You’ve Been Remade

October 23, 2010

There’s a girl in the corner
With tear stains on her eyes
From the places she’s wandered
And the shame she can’t hide.

To how many of us does this girl in the corner seem familiar? You know the tears that never seem to stop, always hiding your face in debasement.

She says, “How did I get here?
I’m not who I once was.
And I’m crippled by the fear
That I’ve fallen too far to love.”

As she says those words to you,  you go back to when you had felt that way.

But don’t you know who you are,
What’s been done for you?
Yeah don’t you know who you are?

You fought to remember where you started and who the person you was as your mistakes echoed freshly in your mind, the loss so great.

You are more than the choices that you’ve made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You’ve been remade.

A voice whispers in your ear these truths, but can you listen, will you?

Well she tries to believe it
That she’s been given new life
But she can’t shake the feeling
That it’s not true tonight.

The memories of all the failures come sweeping to the forefront of your mind and the battle for accepting you are forgiven begins again.

She knows all the answers
And she’s rehearsed all the lines
And so she’ll try to do better
But then she’s too weak to try.

So tired from trying to be happy again, from carrying all your cares alone, you almost give up. Spoken in a whisper,

But don’t you know who you are?
You are more than the choices that you’ve made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,

You’ve been remade.

The reminder comes again, more fervently this time.

You are more than the choices that you’ve made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You’ve been remade.

Painfully accepting who you know you are, you’ve been afraid to be that person again. Your mind races through all the places you’ve been that you should never have gone, all the times your efforts fell short. That no longer matters. You’ve remembered whose you were, what you lived for, and if you really believe what you told people He is like, then you know He longs for you back.

‘Cause this is not about what you’ve done,
But what’s been done for you.
This is not about where you’ve been,
But where your brokenness brings you to.

All your pain and heartbreak is for His glory, so He can show Himself mighty. He sacrificed His life for you and here you are, living this way?

This is not about what you feel,
But what He felt to forgive you,
And what He felt to make you loved.

You lift up her chin, looking in her eyes you say don’t forget:

You are more than the choices that you’ve made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You’ve been remade.

Even if you fail again, it’s never too far, remember,

You are more than the choices that you’ve made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You’ve been remade.

You repeat the words into her ear as she falls asleep on your shoulder, still wet from the tears you cried together.

You’ve been remade
You’ve been remade.
You’ve been remade.
You’ve been remade.

You know the struggle you will have, to face people again, even if they don’t know what you did. It’s not about us, it about Him and our life in Him. All we are broken, but He was sent to bind up the brokenhearted and be near to them. You look down at the sleeping girl in your arms, tears still in your eyes, as you hope she can feel the healing and restoration you know.
